Looking for a juicy, hearty burger alternative that’s bursting with flavour and is good for you?

We've tested and love this vegan, flavour-packed, grill-worthy vegan tofu burger recipe by The Fit Kitchen.

We know tofu might not have the most glamorous name, but here is why you will love it. First of all, tofu is low in calories, gluten-free, a good source of fibre and relatively inexpensive compared to meat. The best part is that it is high in protein. It is a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies need. This makes tofu a great meat alternative.

Ingredients:

  • 400gr extra firm tofu
  • Marinade:
    • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp sesame oil or olive oil
    • 1 tbsp sriracha
    • ½ tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • Spicy Mayo:
    • ¼ cup vegannaise
    • 1 tbsp sriracha
    • ½ tbsp lemon juice
  • Hamburger buns (your favourite!)
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, vegan cheese, pickles, etc.

Instructions:

  1. Drain and press your tofu to release excess moisture. Slice in half, then use a cookie cutter (or get creative!) to form patties.
  2. Mix the marinade magic: whisk together all ingredients in a reusable ziplock bag. Gently toss in your tofu patties, coating them evenly. Marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours for maximum flavour.
  3. Whip up your spicy mayo: combine all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Consider this your secret burger sauce!
  4. Fire up the grill or air fryer! Heat it to high and carefully arrange your marinated patties. Grill 10-12 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  5. Build your burger masterpiece: toast your buns, slather on the spicy mayo, pile on your favourite toppings, and embrace the tofu burger bliss!

Tips:

  • BBQ not your thing? No worries! Bake your tofu patties at 400°F for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Get creative with the marinade: swap spices like smoked paprika or chipotle powder for a different flavour kick.
  • Leftover patties freeze perfectly for quick, delicious lunches later!

This is not a boring tofu dish! The sweet and spicy marinade, blended with earthy sesame oil and smoky sriracha, creates so much flavour that rivals any meat-based burger. Share your burger creations and tag us (@goforzero_au) on social media so we can share!

Happy grilling (or baking)!
